Dever on Expositional Preaching

Mark Dever and Jonathan Leeman of 9Marks host a regular podcast called, Pastors’ Talk, which I listen to regularly. Recently they shared a helpful discussion about expositional preaching as the normal diet for the Christian life. You can listen here. By the way, to paraphrase, Mark defines expositional preaching as the kind of preaching in which the point of the sermon is the point of the biblical text. Leeman would add the phrase … applied to the hearts of the hearers.

If you don’t know, Mark is the pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in DC and Jonathan is the Editorial Director of 9Marks.

As an aside, in 2014 9Marks published one of the best (little) books on preaching: Expositional Preaching: How We Speak God’s Word Today. The author, Dave Helm, is the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Chicago. Dave is a pretty amazing pastor and preacher. He also founded an organization called the Charles Simeon Trust, a ministry that duplicates the mission of Proclamation Trust in England. What is that mission? The Simeon Trust hosts workshops around the country (and the world) to equip ministers in their work of expositional preaching and teaching. I attended a Simeon Trust preaching workshop in Spokane, Washington, and have also attended a couple of Proclamation Trust events in London. I’ll be keeping an eye on the Simeon Trust website for their new podcast, Preachers’ Talk.
