Josiah and Miriam both grew up in Niger, in West Africa, where they met. Miriam returned to the US at age 16, finished high school and then studied nursing, earning her RN license and BSN. Josiah had been pursuing Bible translation work since the age of 13, targeting his high school studies on this course. He returned to the US at age 18 and studied applied linguistics and biblical Greek, earning his BA at Moody Bible Institute. Josiah and Miriam married in 2010 and have four children. Josiah studied in Dallas at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, earning his MA in applied linguistics, with an emphasis on Bible translation.
Mid-2018, the Walters are heading to live among the Daza in the Chad and Niger area. The language spoken is called Dazaga and nearly 100% are Muslim. There have been few efforts at church planting among the Daza, but Josiah and Miriam will be joining MTW in a desire to translate the Bible for the Daza.
