Passage: John 7:53-8:11

Preacher: Bill Massey

Series: Meetings with Jesus

Category: Sunday Morning

Detail:

Sermon Intro: A woman caught in adultery - a sin which in some cases according to the law of Moses deserved death - was brought before Jesus as he taught a multitude one day in the Temple precincts. The scribes and Pharisees who brought the woman to Jesus were not so concerned about carrying out justice, so much as trying to discredit Jesus before the crowds, which loved to hear him teach. Surprisingly, Jesus as Judge, without minimizing the sin or denying the penalty of stoning, pronounces justice upon the woman’s accusers and mercy upon the adulterer. Jesus’ actions foreshadow how the purposes of justice and mercy would later kiss at his cross. We have all sinned and deserve justice from God which is far worse than stoning. What we need more than anything, therefore, is the assurance that Jesus says to us: ”I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more.”
