Holiness or Hypocrisy?

Passage: Matthew 6:1-8

Preacher: Bill Massey

Series: Sermon on the Mount

Category: Sunday Morning

Detail:

Sermon Intro: Jesus is warning us that in our practice of righteousness we can fall into the trap of being more concerned about our reputation with others than our reputation with God. We can delight more in the praise of men than in the praise of God. That’s hypocrisy. And if we have walked with the Lord for any amount of time, we know how easily we may become entrapped by this! What’s the remedy for hypocrisy? It’s not by doing away with disciplined effort. Rather, it’s recognizing that our disciplined effort must be the fruit of faith--faith and reliance on the grace of our heavenly Father. Have you noticed how often Jesus refers to God as “Father” here? Jesus is saying that the real problem with the hypocrite is that he doesn’t serve God as his heavenly Father. Instead, he serves him as a tyrant. But if we know God as our Father, it will transform how we practice our righteousness before others.
