Title: “Our Family Inheritance”
Text: Ephesians 1.11-14
Intro: Paul’s reference to our salvation as an “inheritance” reminds us that salvation is a family matter. Salvation involves the restoration of the intimate, loving, and life-giving bond between God and his children that was lost through sin. Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans, “God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” Sharing in the love of the Godhead—the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is our glorious inheritance! And as this passage shows, that inheritance, once given to us by God, is eternally secure. Far from being an afterthought in the mind of God, our salvation was planned by God the Father in eternity past. In the depths of eternity, the Father had his eyes of love on each of his children, and he planned their salvation accordingly. But then that plan is experienced when God calls his children into a relationship with himself through faith in the saving work accomplished by God the Son. And having called them, God finally seals his love within his children’s hearts through the gift of the indwelling Spirit of God. Our family inheritance from God is the “work” of each person of the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and as such, it is invincible! God will most certainly bring to completion the saving work he has begun in every believing heart. This knowledge gives us an indomitable hope!
