Sermon Intro:

For hundreds of years, the land of Israel had been enduring a kind of perpetual spiritual winter. Many of the signs of God’s favor were no longer evident. David’s great throne and kingdom were only things of distant memory. The voices of the prophets had been silent for centuries. Most in Israel were hopeless and spiritually indifferent. But four hundred years earlier, Malachi had promised that the Messiah would come like a Sun of righteousness with healing, and during the months leading up to this passage in Luke, Messianic breezes had blown indicating a new day of God’s favor. The angel, Gabriel, had announced the miraculous conception of John to elderly Zechariah and Elizabeth. Then, sixth months later, Gabriel announced Jesus’ supernatural conception to a young virgin named Mary. He would be called the Son of the Most High, and He would reign on David’s throne forever. So here, Mary hurries to be with her relative Elizabeth. Only she could understand and sympathize with Mary’s vulnerable circumstances. We wonder at the sense of amazement and joy that bonds these two – one a youth, the other a senior. Through them, God is launching his long-expected promise to bring redemption to the world!
