Passage: Matthew 6:7-15

Series: Sermon on the Mount

Category: Sunday Morning

Detail:

Sermon Intro: The manner in which Jesus prayed to his “Father” was immensely attractive to his disciples! “Teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1), they implored. Jesus has stooped to our need and given this prayer to guide us. Wonderfully, the privilege he knew of calling upon God as Father is one he also invites us to enjoy. In his brief instructions on prayer, Jesus mentions the “Father” six times. Hypocrites pray so that others can hear them. Pagans are unsure if anyone hears them. But Christians pray to their Father who listens intently. The fatherhood of God keeps appearing in this prayer because Jesus believes it’s that important. No one can learn to pray who does not learn to call God “Father.” Prayer is talking to and communing with the Father.
