For several years I have been recommending Greg Gilbert’s little book, What is the Gospel? This is a good resource for slowly unpacking the elements of the gospel (if we can say it that way).

What is especially helpful with Greg’s presentation is that the very process of defining what the gospel is, even if this is thorny, helps to define what the gospel is not. The word, gospel, is thrown around, a lot. And sometimes with considerable carelessness and thoughtlessness.

Greg was recently interviewed by Matt Tully of Crossway BooksHow Should We Define the Gospel? (transcript). He is the pastor of Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. While the interview is helpful, the book is better.
